What does “zero-knowledge” actually mean?
It means your vault is encrypted on your device with a key derived from your master password. That key never leaves your device, and we never receive your master password — so no one at Montara, and no attacker breaching our servers, can read your data.
Can I import passwords from my current manager or browser?
Yes. Montara Pass imports CSV exports from all major password managers and browsers in one step, including Chrome, Safari, 1Password, Bitwarden, and LastPass. Most imports finish in under a minute.
What happens if I forget my master password?
Your master password is the only key to your vault, so we can't reset it for you — that's the trade-off of zero-knowledge security. You can recover your account through a recovery key you print at setup, or through a trusted emergency contact.
Does Montara Pass work offline?
Yes. Your vault is cached locally in an encrypted form, so you can view and autofill logins with no internet connection. Changes sync as soon as you're back online.
Is the Free plan actually free?
Yes — the Free plan is free forever, not a trial. It covers unlimited passwords on one device, the generator, secure notes, and 30-day breach alerts. We fund development through Premium and Business subscriptions.
